HALLOWEEN IN AMERICA

Halloween is a holiday of pumpkins, costumes and trick or treating. It’s celebrated by Americans every October 31. People wear costumes of vampires, princesses, ghosts, witches…etc. They have Halloween parties in which the guests dress in costume. Children walk door to door asking for candy. Sometimes they say “ trick or *treat ”… And people have to choose treat which is most likely a candy.

{In Turkey, we have this tradition almost the same. During *eid al-fitr (The end of Ramadan, muslim people celebrate eid al-fitr ), children wear most beautiful clothes and walk door to door for candy. But their clothes aren't as scary as halloween costumes :) }

People start to decorate their homes before the Halloween. They decorate windows and doors with pictures of ghosts, witches and pumpkins which is the most important symbol of Halloween. People carve pumpkins and put a candle inside. So they become pumpkin lanterns. But I think people are a little bit lazy these days, because I saw lots of pumpkins in front of the houses and most of them aren’t carved.. ;)
On the Halloween night you can watch many horror films on TV channels and my favorite is ‘halloween 4, the return of Michael Myers’.. Firstly the guy which wears glasses dies.. :P
I’ve learnt a *superstition about Halloween which makes me laugh ; It is believed that if an unmarried girl keeps a rosemary herb under her pillow on Halloween night, it is quite likely that on that night, she would dream of her future husband. We also have a superstition like this but not on Halloween night, and we keep a piece of bread under our pillow, you know the story… :)
As a result, American people like fun, so they celebrate every possible holiday with a great enjoyment. These days they look forward to Christmas, and now in every store and mall you can see pine trees instead of pumpkins.

And what about the pumpkins ???? They are on sale now, maybe free :)
